Community Partners
Following is a list of community organizations that we partner with to provide ways for our volunteers to reach out and serve in our community.
Andrew P. Stewart Center
Located in an area of Atlanta called Reynoldstown, the Stewart Center has a long history of serving people and telling them of a God who loves them very much. The center exists to change lives by providing quality services to children, families and the greater community. Briarlake Church serves the Stewart Center by providing meals during day camps, by contributing much needed supplies (school supplies, sweetened drink mixes, 39 gallon or larger trash bags, paper plates & cups, wrapped snacks, gas cards and Kroger gift cards), and by throwing a party and providing Christmas gifts for the boys and girls served at the center. You can also volunteer to help children or youth with homework and/or Bible study on Monday—Thursday afternoons, 2:30-5:30 p.m. Yard work and building repairs are needed. You could also help by providing breakfast-type meals for senior adult women on Thursday morning. Angel Food Ministries
Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing food relief and contributing to benevolent outreaches in communities throughout the United States. This ministry partners with churches to provide a monthly box of food for $30. Any family may take advantage of this program. We are hoping that this ministry will encourage our members to be more sensitive to the families in need that God puts in our paths. Click here for more information.
Atlanta Pregnancy Resource Center
Located in the Northlake Festival Shopping Center, this group, in an atmosphere of genuine compassion and support, reaches out in genuine love to women and families facing unplanned pregnancies and pregnancy-related circumstances. One way Briarlake Church serves this ministry is by providing kit items for Project HELP (small cardboard books, onesies, bibs, booties, and ziploc bags). Briarlake Group Home
The Briarlake Group Home is a home for women with developmental disabilities operated by the Developmental Disabilities Ministries (DDM). DDM is a nonprofit, charitable corporation serving adults with developmental disabilities and their families. DDM owns and operates 18 group homes/apartments in the State of Georgia. You can volunteer to support this ministry in many ways. For additional information, click here.
Center for Active Seniors
You can be a comfort to senior adults in our community by attending Bible study on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Center for Active Seniors located at 2245 Dillard Street, Tucker, GA 30084. For more information, contact Elgy Zieburtz (678-684-3127).
Conversational English Classes
Briarlake Church serves our international community by teaching English classes to students of all languages. The classes are held from August to May and follow the DeKalb County school calendar. You can also volunteer to provide refreshments. For more information, contact Betty McKelvey (404-634-2861). Classes are held on Friday mornings, 10:00 a.m. – Noon, upstairs in B building.
Disaster Relief Team
Southern Baptists provide the third largest disaster response volunteer force in the United States. You have the opportunity to become a trained disaster relief volunteer and assist with ministries needed following disasters, such as clean up & recovery, water purification, food services, communication and chaplaincy. Friends of Internationals
It can be very difficult for students who come to the United States for college to feel at home in our country. Host an international student in your home for a meal, dessert, local outing, or other event. For more information, contact Glenda McDugald (770-938-6075) or Teresa Royall (404-659-8726).
Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC)
FODAC provides home health equipment to people of any age or any disability, temporary or permanent, for medically necessary and medically helpful reasons. You can volunteer for clerical duties, general mechanical and/or electrical skills, equipment pick-ups, computer technical skills, thrift shop, building maintenance and beautification and wheelchair ramp building. Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Ministries, Inc.
Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Ministries, Inc. is a caring ministry of services designed to promote the spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being of children, youth and families. Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes have always been known for providing children loving care in a wonderful Christian environment and have been reaching out to hurting children and broken families since 1872 and serve over 1,000 children and families each year. Emory University Baptist Collegiate Ministries
Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM) is the on-campus ministry of Georgia Baptists on the campus of Emory University and just about every campus in the state. Collegians need a place to belong, a group with whom to connect, a chance to continue to learn to be a leader, and opportunities to use their gifts to explore where God is leading their lives. Friends of Refugees
A refugee is an individual who has fled his or her country due to a persecuted state of living. Clarkston, Georgia, is home to hundreds of refugees and refugee families from all over the world. The Friends of Refugees ministry distributes food and clothing to refugees in the area. Many do not speak English or know anyone. There are many ways to be involved in this ministry. You can volunteer your time to work in the food pantry and clothes closet. Most refugees simply need a friend to learn from and help them get adapted to their new life here. Because of this, you can adopt a refugee and support them by spending time with them, showing them around the area and visiting them on a regular basis. Meals on Wheels
Many adults are unable to leave home often because of illness or injury. To volunteer to deliver meals to shut-ins, contact Mary Cobb (770-582-1602).
N.E.T. Food Pantry
Many families in our community cannot afford very basic needs. The NET Food Pantry is sponsored and run by area churches who stock staple foods for needy families referred by churches or other organizations. It is located in the Tucker Recreation Center on Lavista Road. The pantry is opened and manned by each church for one month on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-2pm. Each church is responsible for stocking certain items. Briarlake is responsible for bar soap and peanut butter. You can support this ministry by volunteering to serve at the food pantry during April or by bringing bar soap and peanut butter. You will find NET Food Pantry collection boxes all over campus. Samaritan's Purse—Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God’s love. Since 1993, more than 61 million shoe boxes have been packed, shipped, and delivered across the globe. People of all ages can be involved in this simple, hands-on missions project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas—Jesus Christ. Click here for more information.
Veterans Administration Medical Center Lunches
Many VA patients need a listening ear or long for good conversation. You can volunteer to prepare and serve a meal or to simply come visit with patients over lunch. Lunch is served in Briarlake’s Dining Room on the second Thursday of every month at 11:00am. For more information, contact Kitty and Paul Kelley (770-491-7019).
